Mental calculation strategies such as the ‘auxiliary task’ strategy and the ‘simplifying’ strategy are important for the development of an arithmetic and pre-algebraic understanding since they require an understanding of numerical manipulations and compensation processes from learners. Thus, they demand a highly relational thinking of numbers and fostering a conceptual understanding of these compensative strategies might bear specific conceptual and linguistic hurdles. This paper outlines first insights into challenges and obstacles from a design-based study about the conceptual understanding of the ‘auxiliary task’ strategy when using a cardinal representation.
