Abstract / Bemerkung
Recently, health professionals recommend that cardiopulmonary resuscitation should become school content in order to reduce the mortality of a cardiac arrest and increase bystander resuscitation rates. Every year, more than 275.000 people in Europe are affected, both unexpectedly or as a result of severe heart diseases. The aim was to explore Biology teachers’ attitudes towards and concerns over this issue with respect to practical teaching. Questionnaires were sent to secondary school Biology teachers and data of 145 teachers were analysed. Teacher with dual certification in Biology and Physical Education showed different results in engagement, awareness and self-competency compared to those with other subjects than Physical Education. Contents such as the anatomy of the heart and the functioning of the circulatory system were primarily considered as reasonable relations to resuscitation by the surveyed teachers. For further implementation specialized Biology teachers may be eligible and tailored didactic materials should be developed to enhance interdisciplinary learning.
