Educational science has not yet engaged systematically with the issue of intolerance. In pedagogical programmes intolerance is indeed made an issue as a social problem to be resolved by means of education. However the pedagogical implications of the notion have remained unanalysed. For educational scientific purposes this paper delivers a first approximation to pedagogical questions in relation to intolerance. The complementary concept of tolerance and the relation between intolerance and violence provide initial points. Under the impression of contemporary political excpectations pedagogy feels compelled to redefine its attitude towards intolerance. For educational science this opens out a seminal challenge.
