Abstract / Bemerkung
The research aims to analyze the significance of technical media literacy and IT security knowledge within both primary and higher education, particularly in the field of media studies. It is noted that these aspects have been neglected in the past. The central question is: How is IT security conveyed as a part of media literacy? This is examined within the educational system (school curricula), socio-economic context (businesses), and the academic environment.
The investigation commences with an analysis of German online and print media focused on IT security, revealing a prevailing trend of negative portrayal surrounding the hacker persona. Furthermore, trends in IT security among young individuals are identified. While schools theoretically integrate media literacy and IT security into their curriculum, a consistent implementation is lacking, especially within the field of computer science. At universities, media studies programs are characterized by interdisciplinarity, yet only a few explicitly emphasize IT knowledge. Within the business sector, IT security is recognized as a crucial element of media literacy, particularly in the context of advancing digitization.
The research work indicates a lack of awareness concerning IT security within businesses, notably small and medium-sized enterprises. The connection between media reality and social actuality is acknowledged, with risk competence being regarded as a component of media literacy. The integration of IT security into media literacy is deemed essential.
Overall, it is recommended to enhance the technical dimension of media literacy, particularly IT security, within humanities and social science subjects such as media studies. The emphasis should be placed on risk competence, technical proficiency, and data protection. The study underscores the necessity to continuously reconsider and adapt educational systems and contents to effectively address current challenges.
