Ideology critique plays a central role in the concept of historical thinking: according to Rüsen, it has the central function of contributing to self-reflection. However, the seemingly antiquated concept of ideology critique struggles with a number of epistemic problems, including the question of from which viewpoint ideologies can be criticised, and how they can be described as a "false consciousness". With reference to current holdings of critical theory, this article proposes a theoretical updating of ideology critique in order to make it reconnectable to the current discourse on the didactics of history. The aim of the proposed ideology-critical perspective is primarily to recognise the present lifeworld and one's own thinking as having always already become and been shaped by history, without failing to recognise the resulting possibilities for freedom and action.
