Abstract / Bemerkung
“My mother danced all night and Roberta’s was sick. That’s why we were taken toSt. Bonny’s”(Morrison,“Recitatif”243). These are the first things we learn aboutthe protagonists of Toni Morrison’s only short story“Recitatif,”first published in1983. In this essay, we explore the physical and metaphorical disabilities repre-sented in Morrison’s“Recitatif”as they intersect with gender, race and socialclass. A discussion of Stuart Hall’s notion of‘representation’as well as KimberléCrenshaw’s concept of‘Intersectionality’will help reflect the challenges of lookingbeyond racial positioning and social stereotypes. Furthermore, approaches in crit-ical disability offer a new reading of the (dis)abled body as a“cultural trope”(Goodley 84) encapsulating marginalization and difference where racial meaningis explicated to understand the preconceptions and prejudices of race and the ne-gotiation of power and disability.
