Abstract / Bemerkung
We, the authors, come from very different backgrounds in terms of ethnicity, language, country/region of origin, and intergenerational migration, yet have many commonalities: We are all psychologists, which informs our interdisciplinary work. Another commonality is our reluctant migration to Germany, which brought together our individual as well as collective memories, frustrations, and struggles in Turkey and beyond. Our arbitrary yet intentional encounter in a small German town has been one of the primary coping mechanisms in the face of persecution and exile, which was essentially a profound experience of abandonment. Our small-scale solidarity network also allowed us to re-discover and introduce the fragmented stories of ethnic, religious, and political minorities in Turkey that are silenced, and still reflected in our personal and professional lives. In this chapter, we will pursue uncovering the interconnectedness of our individual stories immanent to a broad historical narrative of a country through an autoethnographic inquiry dealing with the issues of belongingness, redemption, and intergenerational transmission. We thus present an interactive interview on being an exile in Germany, informed and illustrated by three interlocking autoethnographies as a Jewish, a Kurdish, and an Anarchist academic in exile.
