Abstract / Bemerkung
This article starts from the claim that a specific kind of experience can be made in literature: literary experience is unique in that the experiences produced by a text transcend the conditions under which that text was produced. A reading of Constantine P. Cavafy's 1918 poem The Afternoon Sun highlights the fundamental relevance of textual gaps (Wolfgang Iser's Leerstellen) in the production of such literary experience. At the center of Cavafy's poem is a semantic gap, a word that markedly refuses to explicate gender. Drawing on the phenomenological concept of the lived body (Leib) and Ernst Bloch's conception of utopian Vor-Schein in literature, the article argues that the negativity inherent to this gap harbors a utopian potential--the potential to transcend gender relations of both Cavafy's and contemporaneous readers' societies.
