Abstract / Bemerkung
Central Asia is in flux, so are the perspectives and angles of intellectual inquiry as well as modes and approaches of scientific investigation of the region. This paper sets out to discuss the role of academic positionality essential to this flux and reflect on some of its implications and effects. In light of knowledge-related turn in social sciences, notably epistemological twists and turns entailed in postmodernist, postcolonial, decolonial and feminist critique, the study of academic positionality in Central Asian context is a worthwhile pursuit. With this in mind, this paper aims to make twofold contribution. First, assuming that ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’ underlie conditions of knowledge production in/on Central Asia in significant ways, it argues that a sense of epistemic ambiguity may emerge as a concomitant effect of academic positionality and that it may arise at the crossroads of various cognitive and affective modes of intellectual inquiry. Second, by synthesizing the sources of epistemic uncertainty under the light of transforming scholarship, it seeks to identify key political and ethical challenges and discuss their potential repercussions for representation of meaning.
