Abstract / Bemerkung
This paper presents findings of a syntactic and typological study on the interaction of morphological case and agreement in ditransitive constructions. In languages where the verb can agree with one of its objects, not all combinations of case and agreement alignment are available: no language exclusively allows secundative or neutral case-marking and indirective agreement. This observation is based on a sample of 99 languages from all macroareas. The paper provides a syntactic explanation for this typological gap, deriving exactly and only the existing patterns from the locality of agreement and the case hierarchy, and addresses seeming exceptions.
