Abstract / Bemerkung
The utilization of eLearning content to support and improve teaching and learning has been a part of medical education for years. Nowadays, mobile learning concepts are likely to foster student engagement in learning activities offering opportunities to make the education-al process integral to daily life. The rising use of mobile devices, which are widespread among students, creates a demand for attractive mobile learning applications. In response to this need, innovative augmented reality techniques were developed and integrated in a mobile application for smartphones. The tool is a product of collaboration between Peter L. Reichertz Institute for Medical Informatics and the Institute of Legal Medicine, both based at Hanover Medical School. The „leARn“ tool is used in a forensic medicine course. Medical students are equipped with smartphones containing the application to practice the detection of simulated, marker triggered wound patterns on their own skin in real-time. To enhance the educational effect, the tool com-prises tasks and questions regarding the presented wound patterns. Tips and advice are presented by an avatar within the application. Goal of the described project is to elicite synergy learning effects due to the interaction within student groups in a role-playing setting. A demanding, fascinating and interactive learning environment is established combining modern mobile learning and innovative visualisation techniques in a traditional learning setting.
