Workshop: Libraries leading the Open Access Transformation: Strategies to achieve the vision
Wennström S, van Otegem M, Pieper D, Campbell C (2018)
Presented at the 47th LIBER Annual Conference, Lille, France.
This is the record of a workshop held on July 4th, 2018, at the LIBER Annual Conference in Lille, France. This workshop was planned and organised by the LIBER Open Access Working group (represented by Matthijs van Otegem and Sofie Wennström) and the OA0202 initiative (represented by Colleen Campbell and Dirk Pieper).
This workshop aimed to give participants a clear understanding of the essential role that libraries have to play in the transformation of scholarly communications. The aim is also to empower the libraries with insights to develop an action plan to drive the transition towards Open Access through a variety of approaches.
In the first part of the workshop, we will introduce some strategies for achieving more OA and, in the second part, we will explore approaches interactively, addressing topics such as OA for e-books, Gold OA journals as well as the transformation of paywalled journals.
Libraries have the power to lead the way in the OA transformation, and there are many ways to do so!
The presentations were:
1. 'How open are we? Mapping the numbers and painting the future.' - An overview of the current lay of the land and some challenges for the transformation to OA by Sofie Wennström
2. 'Five Pillars of Open Access.' - An overview of the five strategic pillars for the transformation to OA developed by the VSNU organisation in The Netherlands
3. 'Back to the Quarry: How can we solidify the foundation of our OA efforts?' - A presentation about how to chisel out a solid pillar for the transformation to OA by Colleen Campbell
4. 'Shifting money to Open Access' - A presentation of the work done by the OA2020-DE group in their role as National Point of Contact by Dirk Pieper.
The workshop also consisted of two breakout sessions where delegates had the opportunity to discuss their current or expected strategies compared to what their colleagues are doing or are planning to do. One exercise included a hands-on tool for participants to map their strategies at the workshop or when working with their institutional plans for the shift to Open Access. The worksheet is included in the file collection as a separate PDF.
