Positive counterfactuals about an alternative past occur after a futile attempt to reach a goal. If opportunities to experience the counterfactual past are absent, disengaging from this alternative past should help people to re-engage in their present life. In seven experiments, mental contrasting (vs. controls) led people to disengage from their counterfactual past (Studies 1-4) and to re-engage in their present life (Studies 5-7). These findings emerged across various life domains, suggesting that mental contrasting can help people to let go of a futile past to live a fuller life in the present.
