There is a continuum\r\nof heterogeneous vacancies in our model where every firm with an open vacancy chooses an optimal\r\nsearch effort in order to attract job candidates. This search effort depends on the productivity of the\r\nfirm and, contrary to the previous literature, workers send simultaneous applications to open vacancies.\r\nWe assess the model predictions by using the IAB Job Vacancy Survey, a representative survey\r\namong human resource managers in Germany reporting information about their most recent recruitment\r\ncase. Based on the finding that firm size and productivity are positively correlated we show that:\r\n(1) Larger firms invest more effort into formal search activities; (2) Firms invest more formal search\r\neffort in labour markets for more educated workers; (3) The positive relationship between firm’s size\r\nand formal search intensity can also be observed for firms that don’t use referrals; (4) Firms that use\r\nreferrals as a search channel invest less effort into formal search compared to firms that don’t use\r\nreferrals; (5) Larger firms are less likely to hire an applicant by referral than smaller firms, and (6)\r\nMore intensive search effort leads to a larger number of applications."],"language":["eng"],"type":["info:eu-repo/semantics/workingPaper","doc-type:workingPaper","text"],"publisher":["Center for Mathematical Economics"],"identifier":["https://pub.uni-bielefeld.de/record/2914351","https://pub.uni-bielefeld.de/download/2914351/2914352"]},"abstract":[{"lang":"eng"}],"publication_status":"published","locked":"1","intvolume":" 578","keyword":[],"accept":"1","file":[{"date_created":"2017-10-02T07:17:01Z","content_type":"application/pdf","file_name":"IMW_working_paper_578.pdf","open_access":"1","relation":"main_file","file_id":"2914352","date_updated":"2017-10-02T07:21:58Z","success":"1","creator":"weingarten","access_level":"open_access","file_size":"772641"}],"dini_type":"doc-type:workingPaper","ddc":[],"citation":{"default":"Rebien M, Stops M, Zaharieva A (2017) Center for Mathematical Economics Working Papers; 578.
