Two mainstreams can be roughly distinguished within the discussion on global justice: one is characterised by an interactional cosmopolitan moral conception and emphasizes the individual duty of the wealthy to aid those in extreme need, wherever and whoever they may be. In contrast, the second stream of thought emphasizes the impact of global institutions on the increasing disparity between rich and poor nations. The current article presents the main arguments of both positions and, against the backdrop of the current refugee crisis, suggests a pragmatic moral approach close to the institutional interpretation.
