There is a rich literature in cognitive science\r\nshowing that human minds process and order information in categories, rather than piece by piece.\r\nWe assume that agents are naturally equipped (by evolution) with a efficient heuristic intuition\r\nhow to categorize. Depending on how available categorized information is activated and processed,\r\nwe axiomatize two different versions of belief formation relying on categorizations. In one approach\r\nan agent relies only on the estimates induced by the single pieces of information contained in so\r\ncalled target categories that are activated by the problem for which a belief is asked for. Another\r\napproach forms a prototype based belief by averaging over all category-based estimates (so called\r\nprototypical estimates) corresponding to each category in the database. In both belief formations\r\nthe involved estimates are weighted according to their similarity or relevance to the new problem.\r\nWe impose normatively desirable and natural properties on the categorization of databases. On the\r\nstage of belief formation our axioms specify the relationship between different categorized databases\r\nand their corresponding induced (category or prototype based) beliefs. The axiomatization of a\r\nbelief formation in Billot et al. (Econometrica, 2005) is covered for the situation of a (trivial)\r\ncategorization of a database that consists only of singleton categories and agents basically do not\r\nprocess information categorical."]},"has_accepted_license":"1","uri_base":"https://pub.uni-bielefeld.de","abstract":[{"lang":"eng"}],"file":[{"date_created":"2016-04-14T14:04:42Z","file_id":"2902674","relation":"main_file","content_type":"application/x-download","checksum":"4fadbf80f5e277a91742b748046ab318","date_updated":"2019-09-06T09:18:36Z","file_size":"501399","file_name":"IMW_working_paper_519.pdf","access_level":"open_access","creator":"weingarten"}],"language":[{}],"page":"41","publication_status":"published","series_title":"Center for Mathematical Economics Working Papers","author":[{"full_name":"Bleile, Jörg","first_name":"Jörg","id":"22693411","last_name":"Bleile"}],"date_created":"2016-03-15T13:03:15Z","volume":519,"place":"Bielefeld","_id":"2901641","urn":"urn:nbn:de:0070-pub-29016418","citation":{"apa_indent":"Bleile, J.
