In attempting to solve crimes the police often make use of video footage from security cameras both from the scene of a crime and from nearby locations. These cameras are typically not set up to record the type of information (e.g. a licence plate) which the police would like to extract, providing a need for video enhancement. This paper presents some initial work in this area which will hopefully lead to the development of a full enhancement package. More specifically the paper presents four techniques which investigate different methods of video enhancement and information retrieval. The techniques are 1) increasing the resolution of an image through the combination of multiple image frames, 2) restoration of image focus &​ motion de-blurring, 3) character recognition for licence plate identification, and 4) automatic speed determination from a video sequence.
