Der Beitrag fasst soziale Netzwerke als Sinnstruktu ren, die sich im Kommunikationsprozess bilden, stabilisieren und verändern. Dabei wird die relationale Soziologie von Harrison White und anderen mit der Kommunikationstheorie von Niklas Luhma nn kombiniert. Soziale Netzwerke bestehen ei- nerseits aus den vielfältigen Mustern von Sozialbeziehungen, die die Netzwerkforschung unter- sucht. Andererseits liegen diesen Beziehungsmu stern relationale Erwartungen zugrunde. Diese bilden sich aufgrund der Zurechnung von kommun ikativen Ereignissen auf mitteilende Akteure im alltagsweltlichen Story-Telling. Akteure werden damit konstruiert als soziale Einheiten mit spezifi- schen auf bestimmte Andere gerichtete Handlungsdispositionen – und diese relationalen Erwartun- gen legen Anschlussfähigkeiten für zukünftige Kommunikation fest. Auf diese Weise werden soziale Netzwerke als Strukturbildungen der Kommun ikation konzipiert, die prinzipiell neben sozi- alen Systemen stehen und nicht auf diese zurückführbar sind.

The article conceives of social networks as structures of meaning that develop, stabilize, and change in the course of communication. It combines the re lational sociology of Harrison White and others with Niklas Luhmann’s theory of communication. On the one hand, social networks consist of the complex patterns of social relationships studied by sociological network research. On the other hand, these patterns spring from relational expect ations. These evolve with the attribution of com- municative events to actors in everyday story-telling. Actors are thus constructed as social units with specific dispositions to particular others. And these expectations structure the course of com- munication. Thus social networks are social struct ures on the same plane as social systems and can- not be reduced to or deduced from them.
