Abstract / Bemerkung
Owing to their availability as easily measurable indicators of attention in the visual surroundings, eye movements can inform the study of dialogue in several different ways. This chapter provides an overview of three strands of dialogue-related research that have employed eye movements, summarizing the theoretical questions which have been addressed, the technical challenges involved, and promising areas for future research. First, eye movements have proved particularly useful as dependent measures in examining the role of common ground for reference resolution in temporally ambiguous utterances. A completely different use of eye movements has been made when comparing patterns of fixations between interlocutors: Here, they indicate the extent of coordinated attention. Finally, recent investigations into the role played by an interlocutor’s gaze in comprehension and interaction draw on eye movements as an independent variable.
