Abstract / Bemerkung
Using the theory of Burnside rings, various canonical families of congruence relations are exhibited which hold for characters of the symmetric group and characterize the ring generated by them as a subring of the ring of integer valued class functions. As a corollary, the irreducible characters are characterized as integer valued class functions χ:∑n → which satisfy those congruence relations and the standard conditions χ(1)>0 and ∑σϵ∑nχ(σ)2 = n!.
