The purpose of the study was to compare several health outcomes by type of area, namely urban slum, urban affluent and rural area located in and around Dhaka megacity. Socioeconomic characteristics, access to basic and health care facilities, housing and physical-environmental characteristics which may differ remarkably in an intra-urban and rural-urban comparison are found to be associated with health outcomes of the inhabitants. We hypothesised that health outcomes are worse in urban slum areas as compared to urban affluent and rural areas. Differences in health outcomes by type of area suggest that interventions cannot be straightforward and standard, and different types of interventions are needed to improve the overall health status by reducing intraurban and rural-urban differences in health outcomes. However, further investigations are needed to develop suitable area-based and target-group-specific interventions.
