This paper addresses the functional relations between representation and control of movements. After discussing the historical background, experimental findings are reported showing that movements are controlled on the basis of effect representations. A series of experiments are presented on the representation of biomechanical parameters of movement. The next section reports laboratory experiments showing how bidirectional links emerge between perceptual effects and actions in sport. Because an additional line of research indicates that there are reciprocal overlaps between the structure of a movement and the structure of its representation, the final section examines how far an expertise-dependent order formation can be confirmed in such representation structures. In sum, all these findings indicate the advantages of taking a cognitive-perceptual perspective when studying the control of movement.
