Information for Authors

PUB Theses is a platform for publishing examination papers of Bielefeld University on the internet. These are:

Procedure

The author uploads her or his paper in PUB Theses and enters the necessary bibliographic data into the provided form at the same time. Publishing papers in PUB Theses is free of charge.

Exploitation Rights / Publication of the Paper by a Commercial Publisher

The release of the paper on the internet will follow immediately after the university library (contact: Bettina Weingarten, university main building, room U3-208-136) has received the printed copies and the duly completed and signed statement. In order to be eligible for the publishing of the paper on the internet, the library needs only the non-exclusive exploitation right for internet dissemination. This means that the author may publish his or her work wherever wanted independently on the internet or have it re-published as an e-book version by a commercial publisher. Even a printed edition is possible if the publisher does not contradict the deposit of the work in PUB Theses. Most publishers do consent, though.
In case of a publication-based (cumulative) dissertation with included journal articles, please check if you are allowed to upload/publish the articles on the publication server of the university library according to the agreement with the publishing house(s).

Notification German National Library

All papers which have been submitted to and accepted for the provision in PUB Theses have to be registered by law at the German National Library. The national library provides long-term archiving as well.

Specialties in Regard to Doctoral Theses

In their regulations of doctoral studies, the faculties indicate several options for the publication of doctoral theses. One of them is the electronic publication on the publication server provided by the university library. Please refer to your faculty administration for information.

You can publish your doctoral theses in PUB Theses only if you don't intend to publish it additionally at a publishing house which claims exclusive exploitation rights for it.
If you consider an additional commercial publication later, keep in mind that the publisher needs to accept the primary publication of the paper on the publication server PUB Theses.
In case of a publication-based (cumulative) dissertation with included journal articles, please check if you are allowed to upload/publish the articles on the publication server of the university library according to the agreement with the publishing house(s).

Moreover, take the following aspects for the creation and submission of the paper into account:

  • Electronic Version:
The electronic version should be submitted in PDF format. In case of more than one file you should use data archives .gz and .zip.
If you intend to use another data format or if multi-media elements are included in your work, please contact us beforehand.
  • For the long-term availability of published documents, the distribution of unprotected documents is necessary. So documents may not be encrypted or password protected.
  • It is not allowed to use the Bielefeld University logo in your paper.
  • Printed Copies:
For archival storage reasons you must supply two printed copies. These have to be printed on non-ageing, woodfree and acid-free paper in compliance with DIN-ISO 9706 (available at copy shops etc.) and durable bound (glued). A note indicating this has to be printed in the paper ("Printed on non-ageing paper °° ISO 9706").
It is not allowed to use the Bielefeld University logo in your paper.
Please deliver the printed copies to the University Publications Department (contact: Bettina Weingarten, university main building, room U3-208, phone: 0521/106-4021). Handling will take about one week.
  • Statement on the Granting of Exploitation Rights:
When submitting the doctoral thesis, the author has to declare, that the electronic version of her or his work is absolutely congruent with the approved printed version which has been submitted for the examination process and that changes if any have been approved by the Doctoral Candidate Admissions Board. If the printed version includes a CV, it has to be part of the electronic version as well. Moreover the author has to agree that the personal data (e.g. CV) will be stored and published on the internet.
The author confers the right of dissemination and making the electronic version permanently publicly available in science nets to Bielefeld University. The author has declare that the work is original and does not infringe the copyright or other intellectual property rights of any other person or party.
The university library is obligated by law to transmit the work for storage and registration purposes to the German National Library.
The Statement on the Granting of Exploitation Rights is provided on the start page of PUB Theses and at the end of the publication process.

Specialties in Regard to Bachelor and Master Theses

In order to keep up a certain level of quality, we only accept bachelor and master theses which have been recommended for electronic publishing by the respective faculty. This recommendation must be submitted in writing and is part of the Statement on the Granting of Exploitation Rights.

Moreover, take the following aspects for the creation and submission of the paper into account:

  • Formats:
