Attention Therapy for Elementary School Children: Efficacy of the Neuropsychological Training Program Mini-Attentioner
Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate neuropsychological group training for 6- to 9-year-old children with attention deficits. Modeled after the established program Attentioner (Jacobs & Petermann, 2013) for children with attention deficits, we designed the Mini-Attentioner, which does not depend on reading, writing, and counting skills. Further modifications such as less complex training tasks, more support by the parents, as well an immediate reinforcing of the response-cost-token system were implemented. In all, 59 families participated in the program. Results showed a significant reduction in attention and hyperactive symptomatology of the children after training for parent ratings in the FBB-ADHS questionnaire. In comparison with the pre-testing, all children exhibited a strengthened attention performance in the four subscales of the battery for attention testing for children (KITAP). The Mini-Attentioner can therefore be seen as an effective tool in the therapy of attention deficits in children.
