Abstract
We discuss some reasons for studying heavy ion collisions at very high energies, and outline the global conditions (initial energy densities, temperatures and baryon densities, freeze-out volumes and lifetimes) to be expected at RHIC and LHC. After surveying the main initial state probes suggested so far, we consider in particular the possibilities of studying high mass dileptons and charmonium/bottonium production with high energy colliders.
