Abstract
In this paper a model of energy transfer in perturbed monomolecular chains is developed and solved analytically. The solution is used to investigate the time dependence of energy transmission, reflection and sloshing in chains with one or two perturbers. It is seen that if the chain with a single perturber is locally excited, e.g. by absorbtion of a photon, the excitation propagates as a probability-wave with a sharp edge to large molecular distances. In the case in which the chain is perturbed at two positions by substituent molecules (perturbers) a new resonance phenomenon of 'excitation sloshing' is predicted between the substituents. It is also shown that the sloshing-period can be controlled over many orders of magnitude by moderately altering the relative excitation energies and/or the distance between the two substituents.
