Abstract
This article proposes a goal-theoretical model to explain individual and societal value changes. The theory assumes that people can change their values following everyday experiences of actions within their cultural environments. Acting is regarded as being goal-oriented and it is assumed that its affective and cognitive attendant symptoms and its outcomes are perceived and processed. From the accumulated action-accompanying experiences, people infer the values that are related to the respective actions. Societal value changes result if a sufficient number of people in a society have similar action experiences. We specify conditions of occurrence and classify the model within established theories. We illustrate how the model is capable of explaining intercohort value changes among adolescents.
